Prosecco Goes for DOCG Status

The Prosecco DOC di Conegliano-Valdobbiadene Consorzio has applied to the Italian government for promotion to DOCG – the highest quality designation for Italian wines -- status. The new categorization, which could be approved by the end of 2008, would apply to the 2009 harvest.

If approved, the new ruling means that all Prosecco produced will be either DOC or DOCG, and only from the Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia zones, which means better quality control for consumers.

Franco Adami, from the Prosecco producer Adami, part of Dalla Terra’s portfolio, was first elected president of the Prosecco DOC Consorzio in 2002, re-elected in 2005 and served until 2008. In this capacity he has represented a majority of the northern Veneto's Prosecco di Conegliano and Valdobbiadene winemakers and growers.
